Going into the busy party season, there are quite a few summer songs that selectors and disc jocks believe are doing well.
Among the top songs for ZJ Ice are I-Octane's We Love The Vibes and Popcaan's Summer Wave. He says there are also nice songs from Bugle and Blak Ryno, while Cashflow Records' Sun Tan rhythm is also doing well.
Like the once powerful Gaza Camp, Mavado's Gullyside appears to be shrinking with the exit of another member, Savage, who was featured on the Christmas collaboration with Mavado called Gully Christmas.
According to Savage, the Flexx-led Fagan Fraternity and the Alliance are his only group affiliations.
Fagan Fraternity recently released a rhythm called the Dark Storm, which is an intended diss to Mavado's Gully Side, on which Savage recorded a song called Kill Bwoy Fi Nothing aimed at Mavado and Chase Cross.
"Deh song deh guh straight into the brain of the Gully, a Flexx mek mi know Mavado and from mi and Mavado duh Gully Christmas him shadow mi career," Savage said.
Local disc jockey Boom Boom is celebrating what he sees as some acceptance from Corporate Jamaica after being hired as the resident DJ on Hype TV's weekly television show Gully Fridays. According to Boom Boom, this gig is the first of many to come.
"People think this came about because of my affiliation but a nuh suh, Gully Fridays a long time it a keep it nuh have nothing to do with Gully Side or Gaza, it was formed before Mavado form the Gully Side," Boom Boom said.
According to Boom Boom, he is no stranger to Hype TV because he got gigs at the station as a regular selector. "I played at Up and Live TV show regular and now they finally decided to give me my own slot on Gully Fridays," Boom Boom said. The self-proclaimed king of the street says that the recent career development marks a bold step.
"It feels wonderful to be making a step into the corporate arena as a youth that grew up in the ghetto, to see that people can look up to me because I am making positive progress," he continued. "It's a good experience, people are seeing me all over the world and getting a chance to see me live plus my fan base is expanding," Boom Boom said. Boom Boom revealed that his set will see him delivering clean dancehall music in his usual performance element. "I bring the street vibe to Gully Fridays, delivering hard-core dancehall vibe and it's clean so the little kids can watch and enjoy it," he said.
Gully Fridays is aired on Hype TV on Fridays starting at 8:40 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m.
The atmosphere surrounding the camps of entertainers Ryno and Boom Boom have been tense ever since Boom Boom was attacked outside the popular Uptown Mondays event at Savannah Plaza on Constant Spring Road in 2010.
The selector, who had to be hospitalised after the attack, said, at the time, that the assault was carried out by associates of Ryno after a CD that the Rich Mi Seh singjay requested be played, was not. Earlier this month, talks of a scuffle between the two at another staging of Uptown Mondays were making the rounds. However, they both dismissed such rumours. Now, the two have decided that they will put their differences aside and somewhat 'bury the hatchet'. The reason for this, they say, is for their friends and fans to maintain a peaceful mindset. According to Ryno, the 'peace treaty' was made official at a recent Boasy Tuesdays event, and he is focusing solely on music.
"A peace we a deal wid and love and unity. Based on what people did a seh was that we're at odds, but is not like mi a look fi Boom Boom fi do him nothing or him a look fi me fi do me nothing. At the end of the day, Boom Boom a selector and me a artiste and a music wi deal wid," Boom Boom also shared similar comments with THE WEEKEND STAR saying. "Me and him (Ryno) nuh have nothing differently still. Is just that, when two a we in the streets and our people near each other, there is some amount of tension, so mi haffi mek di people know seh me and him nuh have nothing. Ryno seh him nuh know nothing about wah did happen to mi. Mi a play Ryno song dem an even a big him up pon di mic, and him a big mi up too."
However, with one issue swept under the carpet, Ryno refused to comment about a reconciliation with Gaza-affiliated artistes Popcaan and Tommy Lee who have been the targets of recent songs done by him. "As mi seh, Boom Boom a selector, Ryno a artiste and dem man deh over deh suh a artiste same way," he said.
