Republic Records says Drake’s Views sold 1.2 million copies worldwide in under six days. Republic also claims the album was streamed over 250 million times on Apple Music in the same time period. Over 200 million of those streams came from inside the United States.
Physical copies of Views will be available starting tomorrow (May 6) as well as digital downloads from retailers like iTunes. Streaming rights for the album will stay with Apple Music for another week; on May 13, Spotify and other streaming competitors will receive Views.
With rumors swirling that Rihanna is finally releasing her ANTI album this week, she just debuted her new single, "Work," featuring Drake on all iHeartRadio stations across the country. This latest connection between Drake and RiRi has also been rumored for a little bit now, as footage of them shooting a video for the song at a mall in California surfaced earlier this month.
The song is slower and very rhythmic with Rihanna showing off her vocal skills over the crafty production. Drake is also singing on the track, but it fits with the overall flow, as he and Rihanna end up going back and forth at one point. Drake appears to still have some focus on Meek Mill at the moment, as he sings "Sorry if I'm way less friendly, I got n***as trying to end me." "Work" is produced by Boi-1da, Allen Ritter, and Sevn Thomas.
While the reactions to "Work" are still fresh, the song will have big shoes to fill seeing that their 2012 collaboration, "What's My Name," hit No. 1 on the charts. Will "Work" see similar success? Only time will tell. Listen to the song via Tidalhere. The single is also available to purchase on iTunes here.
Drake's most recent mixtape, "If You're Reading This It's Too Late," finally broke the platinum threshold on Monday by selling 1 million copies in the US since being released in February.
Drake is the first artist who released a record this calendar year and achieved such an accomplishment.
What's more is that it's Drake's fourth record in a row that has received platinum status, which means selling at least 1 million copies.
Drake's mixtape sold over a million copies worldwide earlier this year, but most people look at US sales when referring to certifications.
Even just two or three years ago, many artists sold huge amounts of albums, some even eclipsing the 1 million mark in less than a week. That rarely happens anymore, though.
The last artist to sell at least 1 million copies of an album was Taylor Swift, with her record "1989," which was released in October 2014 and went platinum in November that year.
It's now harder than ever to actually sell music, even at the highest level. The emergence of music-streaming services has been incredibly detrimental to album sales in the past, and it will only get worse in the future.
Put up your “OWN” cash or shut up. Lil Wayne calls out Meek Mill for twitter rant by challenging the known battle rapper to a 10 million dollar rap battle. Meek Mill has not replied to the challenge at the time this article was published but we plan to update you with info as soon as we receive. Wayne tells the MMG artist to put up his own cash because Lil Wayne must know Meek Mill may not even have 10 million cash let alone 10 million cash to lose.
Meek Mill took to twitter on late Tuesday night early Wednesday morning going crazy about Drake and we all knew it was only a matter of time before Lil Wayne would step in. Especially with the drama between him and Birdman going on Wayne is not looking for anymore issues with his income sources. Birdman already messing with his bread with this album release and Drake along with Nicki Minaj are revenue streams for Lil Wayne Young Money Records.
The people of Toronto seem to really be taking anything said against Drake to heart.
Norm Kelly, a Toronto City Councillor, tweeted that Meek Mill is no longer welcome to come to Toronto after his comments on Twitter suggested that Drake uses a ghostwriter for his own raps - including the one on Meek's album.
Meek Mill has had a helluva year, and when he threatened to move the competition out of the way on his album, he clearly meant it. In a Twitter rant that’s till hot off the internet presses, the Philly rep goes at Drake, claiming he doesn’t write his own raps, and the reason that Drake didn’t promote Meek’s album is because Meek and his team found out.
Before that, he took a jab at SB, Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend, pointing out the fact that while he was in hiding Nicki Minaj was flirting with Drake and Nas in music videos was weird, and reminding the public that Nicki Minaj is not the reason for his current success–Meek just sold over 300,000 copies of his new album, Dreams Worth More Than Money, in 11 days, despite an extended jail stint and just a 5-day pre-release announcement.
With hip-hop superstar Birdman's recent announcement that DJ Khaled's We The Best Imprint is now signed to Cash Money Records, Mavado now sits under the roof of one of the biggest American record labels.
In September of last year, Mavado appeared on the Angie Martinez show on New York's Hot 97 radio station and announced that he had signed a deal with DJ Khaled's record label, We the Best Music Group.
Since joining the label, he has released songs such as Emergency featuring Ace Hood and Survivor featuring Akon.
Mavado's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, told The WEEKEND STAR that they have been aware of DJ Khaled's deal with Young Money Cash Money Billionaires (YMCMB) and that he sees the signing as beneficial to all parties.
"Khaled's deal with YMCMB has been in the pipeline for a long time, they are a family. Even his last album went through them and that huge single with Drake and Ross and Wayne, I'm On One, was through YMCMB. I was aware of the deal being negotiated before we signed with We The Best but it didn't influence our decision either way. We put our faith in Khaled and what he can bring to the table and with or without YMCMB we still believe in him." He continued, "Now YMCMB has officially made We The Best an imprint, it's just a bonus for all of us. It does affect us in that Cash Money will also be directly pushing Mavado's project, and we will be supported by their radio promotions and marketing teams, which as you can see from the charts over the last few years, are the best in the business," said Jones-Griffith.
Mavado also gave similar comments as he said, "It's just more strength to the ting. The whole situation with us and Khaled has a family vibe to it so the family just got bigger and more powerful! I do expect it to affect me directly but only in a positive way." He also shared that he already has a musical relationship with the YMCMB group saying, "As far as collabs with YMCMB artistes, that's always been available. We have a great relationship with everyone at Cash Money already and we have already been recording with YMCMB acts, you soon hear them! With features, it's always a case of when the time and record is right we reach out to them and vice-versa.
