48-days until Sting 2015 War is in the air with Beenie Man and Mavado at it. Beenie Man raised eyebrows after he released a new Mavado diss song a few days ago. The questionable “King of the dancehall” teamed with DJ Frass Records to drop “Think Mi A Simma” a new diss track aimed at Mavado.
With lyrics:
“A who da bredda deh a chat / A couldn’t me, but him say Doc / A weh do blacks, barber boy mi can tell yo something,” Beenie said in the intro.

Mavado rises Internationally

Picture
Mavado might be absent from the local dancehall scene, but internationally he continues to gain traction with several collaborations and tour with Drake now being added to his ever-growing résumé.

In recent times, Mavado seems to have somewhat graduated from the realms of the Jamaican dancehall scene. He has taken his brand in hand and is heavily targeting the international market with his singjay method of delivery. He has had success in this area. He has nabbed a spot at one of the biggest record labels, YMCMB, via a merge with DJ Khaled's We The Best label (to which he was originally signed), and he's had a few collaborations with big name acts such as Sterling Simms and Maybach Music Group's Meek Mill. He has also had a touring gig with Drake.

Steaming Summer Songs

Going into the busy party season, there are quite a few summer songs that selectors and disc jocks believe are doing well.

Among the top songs for ZJ Ice are I-Octane's We Love The Vibes and Popcaan's Summer Wave. He says there are also nice songs from Bugle and Blak Ryno, while Cashflow Records' Sun Tan rhythm is also doing well.

Gullyside Shinking

Picture
Like the once powerful Gaza Camp, Mavado's Gullyside appears to be shrinking with the exit of another member, Savage, who was featured on the Christmas collaboration with Mavado called Gully Christmas.

According to Savage, the Flexx-led Fagan Fraternity and the Alliance are his only group affiliations.

Fagan Fraternity recently released a rhythm called the Dark Storm, which is an intended diss to Mavado's Gully Side, on which Savage recorded a song called Kill Bwoy Fi Nothing aimed at Mavado and Chase Cross.

"Deh song deh guh straight into the brain of the Gully, a Flexx mek mi know Mavado and from mi and Mavado duh Gully Christmas him shadow mi career," Savage said.

Flexxx still at Mavado

Picture
Former Gully Squad member Flexxx is still hurling lyrical blows at singjay Mavado. The latest barrage may be found in his song, Kill Off All A Dem, produced by Black Chiney Productions.

The reason for this, he says, is in defence of his honour and reputation. "The song is a counteraction to Mavado's Action Pack song. Him a seh a bag a things inna it and know seh a me him a talk, me know seh a me him a talk and Jamaica know seh a me him a talk. Suh mi just a defend miself lyrically because mi cyaah just mek people a try step pon mi suh. Mi just a mek sure seh my name or reputation nuh get damage,"

Mavado's management team has yet to respond to requests for a comment on the lyrical tug o war taking place between the two artistes. He added that he is aiming to make the most of the summer holiday amid all the tension and rivalry between him and the Gully Squad. "Is a good look for the summer apart from the whole animosity thing that a gwaan now. We have songs like Shamballa, Galiday and Oh Girl to release and we're getting calls for a lot of shows and in the confirmation stages now. This summer is going to be a summer to remember," he said.

Flexxx will be shooting a music video for Penshion which features Ms Kitty on the Mercury rhythm in the coming weeks. He is also putting the finishing touch on a collaboration with Savage and George P of Fagan Fraternity that will be released soon.

Mavado joins Cash MoneyMava

Picture
With hip-hop superstar Birdman's recent announcement that DJ Khaled's We The Best Imprint is now signed to Cash Money Records, Mavado now sits under the roof of one of the biggest American record labels.

In September of last year, Mavado appeared on the Angie Martinez show on New York's Hot 97 radio station and announced that he had signed a deal with DJ Khaled's record label, We the Best Music Group.

Since joining the label, he has released songs such as Emergency featuring Ace Hood and Survivor featuring Akon.

Mavado's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, told The WEEKEND STAR that they have been aware of DJ Khaled's deal with Young Money Cash Money Billionaires (YMCMB) and that he sees the signing as beneficial to all parties.

"Khaled's deal with YMCMB has been in the pipeline for a long time, they are a family. Even his last album went through them and that huge single with Drake and Ross and Wayne, I'm On One, was through YMCMB. I was aware of the deal being negotiated before we signed with We The Best but it didn't influence our decision either way. We put our faith in Khaled and what he can bring to the table and with or without YMCMB we still believe in him." He continued, "Now YMCMB has officially made We The Best an imprint, it's just a bonus for all of us. It does affect us in that Cash Money will also be directly pushing Mavado's project, and we will be supported by their radio promotions and marketing teams, which as you can see from the charts over the last few years, are the best in the business," said Jones-Griffith.

Mavado also gave similar comments as he said, "It's just more strength to the ting. The whole situation with us and Khaled has a family vibe to it so the family just got bigger and more powerful! I do expect it to affect me directly but only in a positive way." He also shared that he already has a musical relationship with the YMCMB group saying, "As far as collabs with YMCMB artistes, that's always been available. We have a great relationship with everyone at Cash Money already and we have already been recording with YMCMB acts, you soon hear them! With features, it's always a case of when the time and record is right we reach out to them and vice-versa.
